Fifty Years in These Walls: Celebrating the Church God Built in L’Estère

“One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts.” — Psalm 145:4

Fifty years ago, in December 1976, a small congregation in L’Estère, Haiti gathered to dedicate a new church building. It was simple, sturdy, and built through the sacrificial partnership of believers in Haiti and the United States. No one could have imagined how many lives God would touch within those walls.

Now as we prepare to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the L’Estère Christian Church building, we honor not only the structure itself, but the five decades of ministry, courage, and faithfulness that have taken place inside it.

This is not simply a milestone. It is a celebration of five decades of grace, five decades of courage, and five decades of faithfulness in a community that has worshiped Christ through joy, hardship, and extraordinary challenges.

A Building Born from Faith

The story of this building began long before its foundation was poured. In 1968, Pastor Frederick Etienne felt God calling him toward a deeper understanding of New Testament Christianity. That calling led to a providential meeting with missionary Reggie Thomas in 1972, and soon after, the vision for a church in L’Estère took shape.

With prayer, perseverance, and the support of partner churches in the United States, the congregation dedicated its building in June 1976. Those first services were filled with hope, expectation, and gratitude. The building quickly became a place where families worship together, children learn Scripture, leaders are trained and people of all ages find faith in Christ.

For fifty years, those walls have held the sound of hymns, prayers, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and countless testimonies of God’s goodness.

A Legacy of Discipleship

The building did far more than house a congregation, it became the launching point for a movement. 

Under Pastor Frederick’s leadership, L’Estère Christian Church planted twelve daughter churches throughout Haiti. Evangelists were sent. Leaders were equipped. Children grew into pastors. Families were strengthened.

This anniversary celebrates that legacy, a legacy of discipleship, mission, and unwavering devotion to the gospel. The building was never meant to be a monument. It was meant to be a ministry center. And for fifty years, it has been exactly that.

A New Generation Continues the Work

Among the children who grew up in those early years was Frederick’s son, Brenus Etienne. He learned Scripture within the same walls, worshiped in the same sanctuary, and watched his father faithfully shepherd the congregation.

After completing his biblical studies and ordination, Brenus returned to serve alongside his father. In 2016, he became Missionary Pastor, ensuring that the ministry begun fifty years ago would continue with strength and vision.

Through partnerships with Double Vision Christian Ministries, the building remains a hub for Biblical teaching, leadership development, children’s outreach and community encouragement.

The 50th anniversary is not only a celebration of the past, it is a celebration of God’s continued work through a new generation of leaders.

A Building That Has Stood Through Fire

The story of this building cannot be told without acknowledging what it has endured.  In recent years, Haiti has faced extraordinary instability. Gang violence scarred the community and left bullet holes in the church walls. Worship services were interrupted. Families fled for safety. The front gate was damaged and later rebuilt with reinforced concrete and iron thanks to the partnership and support of the International Disaster and Emergency Services.

Yet even in the darkest moments, the building remained a symbol of hope.

When public worship paused, ministry continued. Children still gathered on Saturdays to learn Scripture and receive a meal. Believers encouraged one another. And soon, the congregation returned, first 50, then 75, then more.  This anniversary celebrates not only what the building has witnessed, but what it has withstood. 

Fifty Years - Still Faithful

From the first prayer spoken in 1976 to the baptisms celebrated today, the testimony of this building remains the same:  God has been faithful. His people have been faithful.

For fifty years, this building has sheltered worship, nurtured disciples, launched leaders, and stood firm through storms both literal and spiritual.
