A Faithful Legacy:
The Evolution of L'Estere Christian Church and the Continuing Impact of DVCM
History of L'Estere Christian Church
In the heart of Haiti, L'Estere Christian Church stands as a symbol of unwavering faith, embodying a rich history and a transformative journey that has spanned decades. Established in 1972, L'Estere Christian Church holds the distinction of being Haiti's first non-denominational church, a testament to its commitment to the teachings of New Testament Christianity.
Founding Years (1968-1976)
The story of L'Estere Christian Church begins with the vision of Frederick Etienne, an Independent Baptist Preacher who, in 1968, embarked on a mission to establish a church rooted in the principles of New Testament Christianity. In 1972, a pivotal moment occurred when Pastor Etienne crossed paths with Reggie Thomas of White Field Evangelism. Under Thomas's guidance, the foundation of New Testament.
By June 1976, the first church building stood proudly, a testament to the unwavering dedication of Pastor Etienne and the support from American churches such as Michiana Church of Christ (MI), Fairland Christian Church (MI), and First Christian Church of Holly (CO).
A Decade of Growth (1976-1986)
L'Estere Christian Church experienced remarkable growth during the years 1976 to 1986, with its membership swelling to 250 individuals. Pastor Etienne's vision extended beyond L'Estere, resulting in the birth of 12 other churches, with L'Estere Christian Church serving as the mother church. This period also witnessed the training of numerous leaders, leading to the establishment of six elders and six deacons.
Evolution of Leadership (1980s-2023)
Over time, the church continued to evolve, and today, four elders and two deacons serve the growing congregation. The legacy of leadership training initiated by Pastor Etienne endures, shaping the church's character and commitment to its community.
Brenus Etienne: A Living Testament
Brenus Etienne, son of Pastor Frederick Etienne, grew up within the embrace of L'Estere Christian Church. After completing his Biblical Studies and ordination in 1990, Brenus returned to Haiti, serving as the Associate Pastor alongside his father. This experience laid the groundwork for a remarkable chapter in his ministry.
In 2016, responding to a call from God, Brenus assumed the role of Missionary Pastor as his father's health declined. Under his leadership, the church experienced remarkable growth, expanding from 13 adult members to 180. Brenus's commitment to God's work is evident in his frequent travels to Haiti, conducting Bible seminars, leadership development courses, and evangelism revival weeks.
DVCM: A New Chapter (1996-2023)
In 1996, Brenus returned to the United States with a vision to increase support and expand the evangelistic efforts back in Haiti. In Michigan, he founded Double Vision Christian Ministries (DVCM) with the support of influential figures like Jack Van Arsdall, Sam Maxedon, and Jim Bussler. DVCM's early years were marked by a deep commitment to its mission, leading to a realization of the need for partnerships. Michiana Church of Christ and Fairland Christian Church of Michigan and First Christian Church of Holly of Colorado were pioneer partners with DVCM.
In 1998, DVCM became affiliated with Outreach International, integrating into O.I.'s mission to support and coordinate missionary volunteers. Outreach International provided not only logistical support but also spiritual encouragement, fiscal management, and oversight for 25 years.
As the story of Brenus and DVCM unfolds, it serves as a testament to the transformative power of faith and collaborative efforts in ministry. The journey from humble beginnings in Haiti to sustained impact in the United States, reflects resilience, dedication, and the belief that, through partnerships and faith, lasting change can be achieved in communities worldwide.
Community Outreach and Impact
L'Estere Christian Church is deeply involved in outreach initiatives, particularly focusing on children. With over 75 children attending weekly Bible lessons, the church not only imparts spiritual teachings but also provides a hot meal. This ministry serves as a conduit to reach children from non-Christian homes, aiming to extend its impact to their parents as well.
Conclusion
The journey of L'Estere Christian Church is a testament to the transformative power of faith and community. From its humble beginnings in 1972 to the vibrant, growing congregation of today, the church continues to embody the principles of New Testament Christianity. Under the leadership of Brenus Etienne, the church's commitment to outreach and community impact reflects a living legacy of love, faith, and discipleship in the heart of Haiti. As DVCM begins a new chapter in 2024 with a new Board of Directors, the legacy of faith and service continues, promising a new season of growth and ministry.

Our Beliefs
Below is a summary of our core Biblical beliefs which express the heart of the good news of Jesus Christ.
-
God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has always existed as: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. God is so awesome and powerful, yet he loves people and wants to have a relationship with each one of us!
Genesis 1:1-2,26-27; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Peter 1:2; John 3:16
-
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God in the flesh, and co-equal with the Father. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin named Mary. He lived a sinless life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He bodily arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate his power over sin and death. He is the Head of the Church and the only way to God and eternal life. He ascended to heaven where he sits at God the Father’s right hand and works on our behalf. As he promised, Jesus will return someday to earth as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords to take all who have believed in him to enjoy eternity in heaven.
Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:18-25; John 1:1-5,14; 14:6-9; Acts 1:9-11; 4:10-12; Romans 1:3-4; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Ephesians 5:23; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 4:14-15; 7:24-2
-
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. The Spirit is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He lives, as the Comforter, in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides Christians with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer spiritual gifts to serve Him and His Church when they are saved and nurtures them as they grow in their faith. As Christians and the Church, we seek to keep in step with the Spirit, living under his daily control. Knowing we need his guidance and direction, we are excited by His presence in our lives!
John 14:16-17; 16:7-13; Acts 1:8; 2:38-39; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 2 Corinthians 3:17; Ephesians 1:13-14; 5:18; Galatians 5:25

The Church is the Body of Christ on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the will of God in accordance with the Word of God, the Bible. Through faith in Christ, we are members of the church in a universal sense, and we practice that membership by being a part of a local church. Believers humbly submit themselves to Christ and the leadership which He has established in the church. Believers belong to one another and take care of one another, and use their time, abilities, and resources to serve the church and the world. Jesus told his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” As the Body of Christ, we are the hands and feet of Jesus expressing his love to our world!
Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 12:4-8; Ephesians 1:22-23, 4:11-16; Colossians 1:17-18; Hebrews 10:23-25

The Bible (Scriptures) is the living Word of God to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of God’s Spirit. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without error. It is the ultimate source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because God uses His Word to transform our lives, we want to read, study, and live it!
Psalm 12:6; 119:105,160; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Timothy 1:13; 3:16; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20-21
-
People have value and worth because every person is made in the image of God. People are the crown of God's creation designed to be like Him in character. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by attitudes and disobedience toward God called "sin". This condition forever separates people from God and causes many problems in life including our eventual spiritual and physical death. But because people are God’s most special creation, his love goes out to us. By the sovereign plan of God, He bridged the gap that sin had formed between us and defeating death for us!
Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; 59:1-2; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 1 John 2:17

Because of God’s great love for people, He rescued us and saved us from our own demise! God sent his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross as our sacrifice and substitute to satisfy God’s wrath over our sin. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. We can never make up for our sin by self-effort, self-improvement, or good works. Salvation is God’s free gift to us and is maintained through grace and the power of God. We must accept His gift by faith. The Bible teaches that we express our faith in Jesus Christ by believing, trusting, and confessing Him as our Lord and Savior, repenting of our self-directed life, and being baptized (immersed in water) into His name. When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven our sins, born again of the Holy Spirit, and inherit eternal life! What a gift…to be rescued from sin and death to live the way we were designed to live…in a peaceful, fulfilling relationship with God. Wow!
John 1:12,13, 3:16-18; 14:6; Acts 2:36-38; Romans 5:1-2,8-9; 6:23; 8:1-2; 10:9; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 7:10; Galatians 3:26,27; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:3-7; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10-14; 1 Peter 1:3-5

We believe that commitment to faith in Christ is to be accompanied by publicly identifying with Christ through baptism by immersion. From the beginning of the church, baptism (the immersion of a repentant believer in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) has been the norm for those desiring to become a follower of Jesus. People who heard and believed the gospel, repented of their sins and confessed Jesus as their Lord and Savior were immediately baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is a tremendous moment when we follow Jesus’ example and express our faith in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection today by being baptized into Him!
Matthew 3:13-17; 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:36-38, 8:34-39, 16:29-34, 22:16; Romans 6:1-14; Colossians 2:12
-
We believe in observing the Lord’s Supper as initiated by Jesus himself. The Lord’s Supper expresses the heart of our worship because it is done in remembrance of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Any follower of Jesus Christ may participate in taking the Lord’s Supper. Every time we share the Lord’s Supper it serves as a consistent reminder of our Lord Jesus Christ and a beautiful expression of the unity of Christ’s Body.
Matthew 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29
-
We believe that Christian unity is the result of the fact that in restoring our relationship with Himself, God joins us to one another by His Spirit. We are part of a movement or network of churches which desire to see the Church united and which share a common commitment to the Bible as the ultimate guide to faith and living. While our Lord has given us the gift of being a part of one universal Body through forgiveness in his blood, our goal is to see the fullness of Christ realized as we pursue unity in faith and fellowship with other believers. In essentials of faith, we seek unity, in matters of opinion, we allow for diversity, and in everything, we want to show love.
John 17:20-23; Ephesians 4:4-6
-
We believe in the bodily, visible return of Jesus Christ to take those who are his to live with him forever. We believe that, just as Christ did not claim to know when that day would be, we will make no claims to know when that day is either. But we will live, love and worship God as a church, and be alert and prepared for his imminent return. For unity sake, we avoid arguments or statements over smaller detailed issues on this matter, such as which human interpretation of the book of Revelation is correct, or specific timelines and other trendy approaches that reflect human nature’s desire to know the future. We will just keep faithfully living and walking with Christ being ready at a moments notice for his return. That is going to be an amazing day!
Matthew 24:30-42; 1 Corinthians 15:50-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 22:12-13

The Bible teaches that Satan is real. He is a spiritual being who can speak to God and others, tempt people, plan and scheme against God’s glory, and accuse believers. Even Jesus himself faced and overcame Satan’s attacks. In the same way, Jesus can help us in our struggle against the evil schemes and temptations we face as followers of Christ. Satan can lead anyone not committed to Christ (angelic beings or people) in warfare against God, His plans and His people. But the Bible promises that Satan and all who are with him are less powerful than Christ himself and are doomed to a certain, everlasting judgment from God. Satan is real and powerful, but no match for Jesus! God rules!
Genesis 3:1-6, 22-24; Ezekiel 28:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 6:11-18; Revelation 12:7-12; 20:10

God’s intention has always been to live with people forever in a peaceful relationship. Through faith in Christ, we can live in that kind of relationship even after we die! We believe in the bodily resurrection of Christ and of all people, both those who believe in him and those who do not. People were created to live forever in one of two states. Everyone will either exist eternally separated from God because of sin and their choice to not follow Christ, or eternally with God because of their choice to trust in Jesus and accept his forgiveness and grace. To be eternally separated from God is hell and is accompanied by pain and punishment. To be eternally with God enjoying his rewards in heaven is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence. On a day appointed by God, all people will give an account for how they lived their lives.
