A Legacy of Faith – Remembering Pastor Frederick Etienne

For Brenus and Judith Etienne, the legacy of their father, Pastor Frederick Etienne, is found not only in the church he founded in L’Estere, Haiti, but in the faith he planted in his children and in the lives of the people he served. His influence began at home, where faith was woven into the everyday lives of his children.

Faith Begins at Home

Some of Judith’s earliest memories of her father are simple but meaningful. When she was about six or seven years old, a hurricane prevented the church from meeting one Sunday. Instead, her father sat with her, held her on his lap, and taught her songs. That memory has stayed with her for decades.

Brenus remembers other special times when his father would gather him and Judith after the church doors were closed. They would sing, pray, open the Bible, and memorize Scripture together. Their father was not only their father; Brenus described him as their “spiritual father.”  Through those moments, Pastor Frederick taught his children that faith was not simply something to be practiced at church. It was to shape their entire lives.

Lessons That Lasted a Lifetime

One of the most important lessons Judith remembers was her father's teaching about prayer and faith. He taught her to take everything to God and trust Him with the answer. Sometimes, he explained, God says yes. Sometimes He says wait. And sometimes God says no. The lesson was not simply to ask God for what she wanted, but to trust Him regardless of the answer. For Judith, that teaching became a lasting foundation of faith. She remembers her father teaching her to call on Jesus, and that lesson remains with her today.

Brenus remembers another lesson his father emphasized: whatever you do, do it to glorify God.  Pastor Frederick wanted his children to understand that their faith should influence how they lived at school, at work, with friends, and within the community. They were to live as examples of Christ.

A Vision Bigger Than Himself

Pastor Frederick’s vision extended far beyond his family. When he began his ministry in L’Estere, there were few Christian churches in the area. He became a pioneer, establishing the first Christian church in the community and helping introduce Christianity to the area.

His vision was to see people come to know Jesus Christ. Brenus remembers his father devoting himself completely to that mission. He preached and taught, visited people in their homes and hospitals, prayed with them, shared the Gospel, and looked for opportunities to serve the community. He did not simply wait for people to come to church. He went to them. His ministry was centered on people and relationships. He wanted to meet people where they were and build relationships that would create opportunities to tell them about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

His influence extended throughout the community, and other churches were established after the church he pioneered. Even years later, Pastor Frederick continued to be remembered and respected as a pioneer and a great leader in the community.

A Legacy That Continues

Perhaps the clearest evidence of Pastor Frederick’s legacy can be seen in the lives of his children. Judith sees her father’s influence in Brenus’s ministry. She recognizes in him the same love for people and desire to provide for those in need that characterized their father.

Today, Brenus carries that responsibility with a deep sense of calling. He believes his father’s vision for him was ultimately part of God’s plan. He imagines his father in heaven, seeing the ministry continue and knowing that the vision he had for his son has become reality. “He’s smiling in heaven,” Brenus said.

A Faith Passed Down

Pastor Frederick Etienne’s greatest legacy is not simply the church building that stands in L’Estere. It is the faith he lived, taught, and passed on. It is found in the children who learned Scripture from him, in the people who heard the Gospel because he went to them, and in the community that continues to remember him as a pioneer of the Christian faith.

It is also found in his children, who carry forward the lessons they learned from their father: pray, trust God, glorify Him in all you do, love people, and serve others.

Fifty years after the church building was established, Pastor Frederick’s vision continues through the ministry of L’Estere Christian Church and through the generations being reached today.

His legacy lives on—not simply in what he built, but in the faith he planted in others and the lives that continue to grow from it.
